Hydration Station

Updated: Aug 17, 2022

Sometimes, once they flop, there is no reviving them. Other times they pop right back up with a good drink! Hydration is key for our flowers. In a few conversations this week customers commented on how much water our flowers drink! It's so true. Grocery Store flowers are typically shipped from thousands of miles away so the flowers are bred to be ok with very little water. Often they are dry packed and then rehydrated at their destination. Our flowers are right from the field and they really need their water. The beauty of local flowers is that we grow varieties that don't ship well, so often they are unique to what you may find elsewhere. We get to enjoy gorgeous varieties that need a little extra care (and water!)

A Few Tips to Keep Your Flowers Hydrated

  • Make a fresh cut. Recutting the stems allows flowers a clean stem to drink with. Their stems can get clogged with debris and bacteria so a clean cut allows them to hydrate well.

  • Change the water, often. Certain flowers are called "dirty flowers" because their associated bacteria makes the water mucky which doesn't allow them to drink. By keeping the water clean it allows them to stay hydrated!

  • Keep them out of direct light. If they're in direct sun or heat they can't keep up with the water loss from the heat so they wilt.

  • Treat cut flowers out of water like you would ice-cream out of the freezer, not too long and not too hot.
